Franz Bernhard's formal inventions are characterized above all by their reduction. The focus is on the human body, which is depicted in a highly abstracted form and usually only in parts. The artist himself formulates his approach as follows: "I make plates, arches, beams out of bodies. I make rods out of arms. I make thin into thick. I leave out a leg if it interferes." Rotations from the axes and tilts lend liveliness and expression to the "bodies" that take up various human postures. Franz Bernhard's drawings provide illuminating insights into the mindset of the artist, who perceives his environment in three dimensions.
