Already as a young sculptor at the Stuttgart Art Academy, Paul Reich became a radical advocate of free pictorial form under the spell of abstraction around Willi Baumeister. Reich's sculptural works emerge from his love of the material. In the process, he develops his basic formal conception anew time and again. Nothing is left to chance, but is precisely worked out and planned. Since the 1960s, the theme of dematerialization of stone, metal and glass has become an artistic design principle. The colorfulness of the sculptures results restrainedly from the material. The cast artificial stones are tinted, the color of the metals is shaped by the type of alloy and by oxidation. The plexiglass is colored by heating with a welding torch and fusing with soot.
